WHO Confronts Major Staff Reduction Following US Funding Withdrawal
This global public health agency revealed plans to reduce its staff by almost a quarter – totaling more than two thousand positions – before the middle of 2026.
Funding Crisis Triggers Substantial Restructuring
This decision follows after the US, previously the organization's biggest donor, withdrew funding previously this period.
Washington was contributing about 18% of the organization's overall funding, causing a substantial budgetary gap.
Expected Workforce Reductions
According to internal estimates, the workforce will decrease from 9,401 posts in January 2025 to around 7,030 by June 2026.
The decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one positions includes staff reductions, retirements, and regular attrition.
"The past year was among the most difficult in our existence, as we have navigated a challenging but necessary journey of prioritisation and restructuring," stated the agency's leader.
Financial Gap Remains
The Switzerland-headquartered organization now confronts a budget shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 biennium, amounting to almost a fourth of its required funding.
This figure represents an improvement from a prior projected shortfall of 1.7 billion dollars reported in spring.
Excluded Finances
These budget projections exclude a further $1.1bn in potential contributions from current negotiations with various donors.
The spokesperson for the organization noted that the present unsecured part of the budget is actually lower than in earlier periods, crediting this to multiple factors:
- Reduced overall budget size
- The launch of a fresh fundraising campaign
- Higher in participating countries' mandatory fees
The restructuring process is now approaching its end, paving the way for the organization to move forward with a renewed operational model.
