Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
