The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Journey with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story
In this cartoon journey for preteens, the fairy community is dedicated to collecting teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving treasure under their pillows. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal in exchange. But Van’s curiosity grows when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the hideous creature he had imagined.
A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat
The stage is set for an adventure with a gentle touch of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings together. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be self-centered sorts, given to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.
Of course, such a setup requires a common enemy to join forces against, and this is duly provided in the form of a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
There aren’t all that many children’s animations targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not old enough for the content teenagers view these days instead of popular teen sagas. If your child is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to become their new all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
