Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
