Substantial Internet Disruption Affects Numerous Websites and Mobile Apps

A widespread web failure has disrupted numerous websites and apps around the world, with users experiencing troubles connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure system.

The disrupted services encompass Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-owned platforms including its primary shopping website and the Ring doorbell home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was affected along with its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were also reports of difficulties reaching the HM Revenue and Customs website on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring device owners used networks to state their home gadgets were failing.

In the UK alone, notifications of problems on specific applications reached the tens of thousands for every service.

The company stated that the problem began in the east coast of the US at Amazon Web Services, a unit that provides crucial online infrastructure for numerous firms, who lease capacity on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global web hosting platform.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the America (8 in the morning BST), the company announced “higher problem frequencies and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the eastern US of the America. The ripple effect was seen to hit services worldwide, with the outage tracking website reporting issues with the same sites in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that monitors web disruptions, further indicated a rise in outages on the start of the week, including several cases located in the state of Virginia, the site of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the outage originated.
