{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him
The concerning event occurred on the third lap when marshals were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was observing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two guys dashing across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit marshals can be permitted to just dash across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was advised that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, marshals were informed and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch personnel were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was shown in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired after that point"
